BARBER'S ADAGIO FOR STRINGS by WILLIAM ORBIT was one of the first modern classical tracks I heard in 1999.
That year was full of many great trance tracks. He based his production on the original version of Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings from 1936.
It's undoubtedly one of the all-time great electronic music tracks. Interestingly, Barber's Adagio was used in the film "Platoon." Translating the magic of this track into an electronic context while maintaining respect for the original was quite a challenge. Orbit was mindful of the dangers of reinterpreting it. What worked brilliantly for him was brought to even greater prominence with Ferry Corsten's remix. This is what trance is all about, with those beautiful violin and orchestral sounds in the background. Ferry's remix incorporates classic elements of late-'90s trance, including thumping 4/4 kick drums and euphoric synth lines. The track picks up the tempo and adapts to Orbit's reworking, which is clearly audible in the song's dramatic breakdown. During the production of the track, Corsten relied heavily on the Roland JP-8000, a virtual analog synthesizer that played a crucial role in defining the sound of trance music. "The JP-8000 was my best friend back then," Corsten said.
Tiesto aimed to fill the dance floor with a track that was a nostalgic, melancholic track. He ignored the nostalgia and melancholy that Samuel Barber's original encompassed.
His version was meant to captivate the crowds partying at the club. It was a truly unforgettable track, one that will forever rank high among the best electronic music tracks.
