Trance, rooted in German techno and British rave culture, first appeared in the late 1980s and became the most popular form of electronic music in the 1990s, reaching its peak commercial success at the turn of the new millennium. I present the ranking of the top 20 African trance music producers. There are two duets in the list. The order was determined by my taste in music, label releases and the number of songs. Trance has never been this big in America, but that's mainly because the scene wasn't really made here. Sure, there are some hot spots for trance in America, but there is no grassroots organization that promotes many genres in the local market where they come from. What settled here was mainly driven by touring artists and some who came on stage largely or entirely via the internet. Another factor to consider is the reservation of certain genres in dance music in this region. In Boston, for example, there is a disproportionate amount of bass and big room house reserved for trance acts. I understand why trance is pushed aside given active market factors. Artists have to make trance as great as it used to be. It will probably never happen again because trance has changed a lot and people will always miss what was great. They will always compare the new releases with the old ones, looking for at least some similar melodies in the new ones to the production from a dozen or so years...
