"Saltwater" is the most famous and legendary trance classic from British producer Chicane. It was released as a single in 1999, reaching number six on the UK Singles Chart and becoming a hugely popular trance track in clubs across Europe.
It's one of those trance classics you'll definitely return to. The vocals from Mรกire Brennan add a lot of value to this track. Mรกire's melancholic voice adds a lot of appeal to this production. The beautiful melody and hypnotic vocals are proof that this classic is a masterpiece. It features an adaptation of "Harry's Game" from Clannad's album "Magical Ring." A music video was shot for the track, which is undoubtedly familiar to a large group of trance music fans. The video itself also exudes incredible magic. It juxtaposes tranquil surfing footage, filmed in Woolacombe, North Devon, home to numerous beaches popular with surfers, with frantic nightclub footage, filmed in a studio on Old Street in London and at the Gatecrasher One club in Sheffield (then known as "The Republic").
The vinyl includes the original version and a remix by Tomski ๐ Disco Citizens. I always return to the original. The production combines the euphoric, sometimes even sublime sound of trance with the almost mystical vocals of the Irish singer. The whole thing seemed to be the perfect balance between a danceable track capturing the atmosphere of the party scene and a nostalgic track that permeates with longing. According to Chicane, the title was inspired by the taste of tears. While nothing beats that version, the remix on this vinyl is a great addition to this release. It adds an extra layer of sound. It's truly worth checking out. Three years later, The Thrillseekers presented their interpretation. It's also an interesting take on the track.
In 2003, the track was used in a nationwide tourism campaign in Ireland, and by Belfast City Council in advertisements promoting the city. It's a timeless track that has become a crucial part of trance music history. I have no doubt about that. It's a must-have for every vinyl collector.
