Nick The Kid (Ten Questions with...) Exclusive interview
Nick Coles better known as Nick The Kid is an English producer and DJ with over thirty years of experience in the Trance and Hard Trance industry. He has also released tracks in other electronic music genres. He is the founder of Hard Trance Europe, which is one of the leading Hard Trance labels. Nick shared information about Trance music. I invite you to an interview conducted exclusively for Visions Of Trance.
1. What is Trance music to you?
Trance music and the feeling it evokes has been a huge part of my life (in all its forms) since I began my journey as a DJ back in 94/95.
Tapes from Billy Nasty, Carl Cox, a compilation called 'Loved Up' and Oakey's Perfecto Fluoro cemented my passion for it, 30 years later here we are!
Also, community, it doesn't matter where you go in the world, trance is a universal language that brings like minded and passionate people together. Some of the most special
moments of my life I've ever had with friends or on a dancefloor, have been to a soundtrack of trance!
2. How do you perceive the state of the current Hard Trance music scene?
Thriving! It's fantastic to see more and more producers making harder trance vibes, new events/labels emerging and the music now finally reaching a wider
audience than it was say 10 years ago! As a label (HTE Recordings) that releases across a wide spectrum of sounds, we've had music played on all sorts of stages by all sorts of artists worldwide, it's very exciting for us and the producers to see Hard Trance
finding its way into other scenes also! To a certain extent, the rave ethos and eclectic approach seems to be coming back, and the barriers coming down! Which I think is great.
3. What are your goals in producing Hard Trance music?
I think just like any producer, to consistently learn more, improve my sound and techniques, be fresh/creative and most importantly to continue having fun in the process!
Collaborating on music with S.H.O.K.K., Jan Johnston, Andrea Montorsi, Renegade System and Wavetraxx recently has been special. I'm always super grateful for these opportunities to work alongside my heroes.
4. Who was your inspiration to start producing Hard Trance music?
100% Wavetraxx, S.H.O.K.K, Flutlicht, Sean Dexter, Andreas Kraemer, Andrea Montorsi, K90, and later Jon The Baptist, their combination of tough kick/bass and insane melodies has always been very exciting to me.
I've definitely always been on the more uplifting and euphoric end of the spectrum, all these guys have definitely been a huge influence on my sound as a producer.
5. Which song are you most proud of and why?
Definitely my 2009 track Enigma, it was the first track I finished without any help from an engineer, the track was played 3 times on Radio 1, featured on a few major comps and gained some fantastic reviews.
It was very well received in Australia and popular amongst the Melbourne Shuffle crew, I'm still inundated with requests to remix it. I think it gave me the confidence to push forward with my own creativity at the time.
6. Will your future releases be collaborations with other artists? Are you more into solo productions?
A mixture of both.
7. What inspires you to create Hard Trance music?
The dancefloor!
8. What hardware and software do you use to create Hard Trance music?
These days I use Logic/ Mac. I used to be PC/ Cubase for many years, but after the switch, my progress accelerated quickly I wish I'd made the switch
much sooner! I have an NI Komplete S61, a Mackie Big Knob, some Yamaha Monitors and the rest is software based. Fav VSTs are Dune, Spire, the OsTIrus Emulation Free Plug, Sylenth, NI Komplete, Izotope Stutter Edit, The new Nexus 5 is pretty handy too!
9. How do you perceive the influence of social media on the career development of a Hard Trance artist?
It's sadly a double edged sword, and a necessary evil for anyone working in music (and most industries) these days, I definitely feel that a lot of the real talent is getting overlooked in favour
of online entertainers and social statistics. Which is a sad state of affairs isn't it?. I think if artists can strike a healthy balance between the two, it will definitely give them an edge on those without talent.
Andy Warhol predicted "everyone will be famous for 15 minutes' in some ways he wasn't wrong, but truly great music will always last the test of time!
10. Finally, what would you like to say to your fans?
A big big thank you to everyone who has supported me on my music journey over the last 30 years, I'm truly grateful to still be here doing what I do after all this time, It's been an incredible ride that's for sure, with lots more to come!
A special shout to my family, my friends, all the incredible artists on HTE, our Made Artists roster, everyone at Black Hole Recordings and to everyone keeping the Hard Trance fires burning!
Hopefully see you all at the Hard Trance Europe Weekender this June on sunny Weston Super Mare's Grand Pier and Ibiza Trance Event Ibiza this September.
